Getting HOA Approval to Repaint Your Phoenix Home's Exterior
June 9, 2026 · 5 min read
If you live in a Phoenix-area HOA community, you usually can't just pick a color and start painting the outside of your house. Most HOAs require written approval first, and painting without it can mean a notice to repaint at your own cost. Here's how to do it the easy way.
Check your HOA's approved palette
Most HOAs keep a list of pre-approved exterior color schemes, often tied to a specific paint brand and color numbers. Start there. Staying within the approved palette is the fastest path to a yes.
Submit an architectural request
You'll typically fill out an architectural or design review form listing the body, trim, and accent colors, sometimes with a sample or the manufacturer's color codes. Approval can take a couple of weeks, so plan ahead and don't schedule the work until you have it in writing.
How we help
We paint within HOA guidelines all the time. We can match your community's approved colors, provide the brand and color numbers your HOA wants to see, and time the job around your approval. If you're not sure where to start, we'll point you to your HOA's color list during the free estimate.
A few tips
- Keep a copy of your approval and the exact color codes for future touch-ups.
- If you want a color that's not on the list, ask about the variance process early.
- Repaint before the old color fades too far, so the approved look stays consistent.
